Md. recruit verbally commits to Penn State

The Penn State men's basketball team shored up its 2008 recruiting class with another verbal commitment this week, bringing its list of commitments to three.

Cammeron Woodyard, a 6-foot-5 guard from Westminster, Md., has verbally committed to play for the Nittany Lions next year, his mother, Cynthia Woodyard said yesterday.

Woodyard will help fill the void left on the perimeter by the departure of Mike Walker, who will graduate this spring.

Penn State sports information director Brian Siegrist said the team cannot comment on a player until he signs a letter of intent. The earliest Woodyard can sign is April 9.

Woodyard has averaged 19.8 points per game this season playing for Winters Mill High School. He is known as a versatile player, playing more of a post position for Winters Mill last year before moving to guard, a position that he will be more suited to at the Division I level.

Cynthia Woodyard doesn't feel that playing out of position his junior year hurt her son's recruitment.

"No, not at all," Cynthia Woodyard said. "He's an all-around player."

Cynthia Woodyard said her son visited the campus at the beginning of the month and "really liked the school." He attended Penn State's 85-76 upset over Michigan State, which further influenced his decision to come to Happy Valley.

Cynthia Woodyard said Cammeron's comfort level with the Penn State coaching staff, as well as the school's academic reputation, also factored into his decision.

"We're very proud," Cynthia Woodyard said.

"He's got tons of family support and we're all very proud of him."

Woodyard joins a recruiting class that already includes Billy Oliver, a 6-foot-8 forward from Chatham, N.J., and 6-foot-10 Villanova transfer Andrew Ott.

With last week's departure of Schyler King, Penn State has one more scholarship open for next season. The departing seniors are Walker, Brandon Hassell and Geary Claxton.
