Two weeks ago, the Icers sat around tables signing autographs and relishing their undefeated league record.
Now, the Icers may not even be the favorites to win the ESCHL tournament title.
The No. 3 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers (29-3-4, 18-2-0 ESCHL) lost both games to rival No. 4 Delaware last weekend and are looking for revenge this week at the conference tournament in Annapolis, Md., at McMullen Hockey Arena.
Despite ending with two losses, Penn State won the regular season title and is looking to win the inaugural league playoff. The Icers earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of the Navy-Scranton game in the second round.
"We've had a great week of practice, and we are still confident despite last week's performance," forward Nate Obringer said. "We're ready for whoever, but we would love to get another chance to play Delaware in the finals."
The Blue Hens (26-5-1, 15-4-1) play No. 8 Rhode Island in the other semifinal game. The teams both got byes into the semifinals after Drexel was suspended for the season three weeks ago after allegedly damaging a State College hotel.
"Our penalty kill was pretty poor last week, and we decided to go back to the basics to understand the specifics of the game," Icers coach Scott Balboni said. "We were out of sync and have been letting teams play with more intensity and hunger recently. We can't keep taking teams for granted."
Junior forward Luke DeLorenzo said the team must understand when it can pinch up to take chances and when it must hold back to prevent scoring chances. The team has given up goals in recent weeks from being too aggressive and allowing opponents to get open looks at the net.
The Icers set three goals for themselves at the beginning of the season: win the regular season title, the conference tournament title and the national title. They've already checked off one of those goals and are only two wins away from securing the ESCHL tournament title.
"These games are huge for us because we have to get momentum moving into nationals," Balboni said. "We're looking forward to the challenge and are ready to play like the No. 3 team in the country."
With three weeks left until nationals, the Icers are determined to begin playing to their fullest potential.
"Momentum in this sport can change at any time on any shift," DeLorenzo said. "We have to adapt to the mistakes we've been making and start playing every shift as if it's our last."
