Exhibit features Jerry Garcia's art

This weekend, Deadheads will be satiated once again as Pennsylvania-based Image Makers Art sells artwork downtown created by the late Jerry Garcia, lead guitarist and vocalist for the Grateful Dead.

Limited edition lithographic prints, etchings, silk-screens and watercolors will be available for sale from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The exhibition will be shown at the Days Inn, 240 S. Pugh St.

Most people are surprised to learn about Garcia's artistic talents, said Cindi Myers, marketing and exhibition coordinator for Image Makers Art, pointing out that Garcia actually attended the San Francisco Art Institute before his Grateful Dead fame.

"People are so in awe that Jerry was a classical artist. People didn't realize he had such depth in his art," she said. "He just chose to pursue his music career with greater gusto than his art career. But he still continued to doodle and draw all along."

Garry Engel, exhibition coordinator for Image Makers Art, said about half of the people who come to the exhibitions are aware of Garcia's artistic side.

"The other half just see an ad and come to see it, and they're always very surprised," he said.

Engel added that Image Makers Art acquired a collection of thousands of Garcia's pieces when Garcia died in 1995. Many of the works were also pencil-signed by Garcia.

Myers said Garcia doesn't follow a specific style in his art and includes realism, surrealism and geometric abstraction. A sense of humor and experimentation is also evident in the art, she said.

Garcia created his work with a variety of methods, including crayon, airbrush watercolor, pen and ink

"The original watercolors are especially one-of-a-kind," Engel said. "Now you're seeing something right from his hands. It's very pure."

As the art becomes rarer, Myers noted that Garcia's works could be a good investment for some people.

"I call it a hippie investment," she said with a laugh. Myers added that all of the works come with a certificate of authenticity. Image Makers Art also sells art by other musicians and actors, including John Lennon and Tony Bennett, she said. "But we primarily travel with Jerry Garcia. It shows really beautifully and attracts a great crowd," she said.

Myers said State College is a good place to take this traveling exhibition.

Engel said there is always a good turnout at the exhibitions, primarily because of the legions of faithful Grateful Dead fans who come to show their support. "Also, every picture has a caption under it that explains the inspiration behind it," Engel said. "It puts more meaning into the pictures."
