Prosecutor requests court revoke player's bail

Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane filed a motion today requesting the court revoke bail for a Penn State football player charged in connection with incidents at a downtown apartment complex and the HUB-Robeson Center.

Christopher Baker, a defensive tackle for the Nittany Lions, was charged in April with simple assault, criminal trespass and burglary for a fight at the Meridian Apartment complex on April 1, 2007. Police said he was among 15 to 20 players who assaulted several men in a third-floor apartment in response to an outside altercation that involved safety Anthony Scirrotto.

While out on bail for the charges from the April incident, Baker was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct in connection with an Oct. 7 fight at the HUB. A condition of his bail was that he refrain from criminal activity, according to court documents.

While the aggravated assault charges against Baker were originally dismissed by Centre County Magisterial District Judge Carmine Prestia at a Dec. 5 preliminary hearing, a Blair County District Judge found there was enough evidence to reinstate the charges at a hearing Wednesday.

Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said a hearing has not yet been scheduled to rule on the motion.

Sloane had raised the possibility of revoking Baker's bail when he was charged with aggravated assault in mid-November.

"We're not concerned he's a flight risk," Sloane told The Daily Collegian on November 16. "However, the risk to the community is a concern ... lightning doesn't strike twice, usually."

Baker's attorney, Karen Muir, could not be reached for comment.
