Harriott waives preliminary hearing

Penn State football player Willie Harriott waived his preliminary hearing for a DUI charge yesterday at the Centre County Courthouse. The Ferguson Township Police Department said Harriott was pulled over in his vehicle early Nov. 11 on North Atherton Street with a blood-alcohol content of .16, double the legal driving limit. He was also charged with exceeding the speed limit. Harriott was one of five players who did not travel to the Alamo Bowl in December. On Aug. 17, Penn State Police cited Harriott and tight end Andrew Quarless for underage drinking. Police said his blood-alcohol content was .15 at the time. Both players missed the first game of the season because of the citation. The date of Harriott's DUI trial has not been scheduled.

Report: Safety precautions followed

All prescribed safety precautions were followed when university officials discovered "slightly radioactive water" leaking from the Breazeale Nuclear Reactor in October, according to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) report released last month.

"Records show that there was minimal radiation released to the environment during the course of the pool leakage incident," the NRC team wrote in the report.

The report said exposure to the public was well below NRC's established regulatory limits.

Penn State officials concluded that a major pathway for water release -- from the pool to the environment -- was through the pool wall, according to the report.

The report said the wall was sealed with a foam resin injected on Nov. 1. To view the full NRC report, visit www.psucollegian.com.
