Penn State beats UCLA for first time since 1997

The No. 4 Penn State men's volleyball team continued its season-opening West Coast swing with a 3-0 sweep of No. 3 UCLA Wednesday in the Outrigger Tournament in Hawaii.

The Nittany Lions defeated the perennially dominant Bruins 30-19, 30-26, 38-36 in their second match of the season. The win came off a 3-1 victory over No. 11 Hawaii Thursday night.

Penn State beat UCLA for the first time since 1997, a streak of 11 games that included the 2006 NCAA championship. It was Penn State's first sweep of the Bruins since 1991.

Outside hitter Matt Anderson's 24 kills and .465 hitting percentage led all players. Opposite Ryan Sweitzer and middle hitters Max Holt and Max Lipsitz aided Anderson with 13, eight and eight kills, respectively.

The Nittany Lions out-blocked UCLA 9-5, with Holt and Sweitzer leading the way with five blocks each.

Setter Luke Murray contributed 47 assists, while freshman libero Dennis Del Valle and outside hitter Jay Stauffer recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Stauffer's 10 digs marked a career high.
