I must admit that I'm let down by the outcry over the recent Halloween costume incident here at Penn State. Rightly so, the Penn State student body is outraged by the insensitive display of a few of their peers.
Unfortunately, however, the Penn State community is bending over backwards to insist that the actions of those few do not speak for the whole of Happy Valley and are only throwing yet another pity party for Virginia Tech in the process. It was entirely unnecessary for the Penn State administration to release a statement condemning the acts of those involved because the "guilty" parties were never chosen to represent Penn State in the first place. Similarly, it is also pointless for students to create and/or join Facebook groups that explain "Penn State STILL Supports Virginia Tech."
Must every Penn State student get on their hands and knees and beg Virginia Tech for forgiveness as a result of this incident? I'd like to assume not. Considering how much this campus has done for the Virginia Tech community in the days since the April tragedy, if they still decide to write all of us off for the actions of a handful, to hell with them anyway.
