Orchestra concert to recall times of old

The romantic strains of the violin will carry audience members back to memorable places and times as the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra plays Sunday afternoon.

The Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra (PCO) will perform "Unforgettable Moments" at 1 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom in the Ramada Inn, 1450 S. Atherton St.

Music director and conductor Douglas Meyer said the three pieces planned for the concert made him think of times in the past.

"They have the atmosphere of recalling something," he said.

Soloist Catherine Manoukian will be featured in Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor.

The violinist from Toronto will be making her Pennsylvania debut, Meyer said.

Manoukian said she has performed the piece several times before and enjoys playing a large-scale concerto with a prominent orchestral accompaniment in addition to her solo.

"It's a very full sound and there's a lot for the audience to listen to," she said.

The concerto is very much in the romantic style, Meyer said, and is recognizable to many violinists.

He said he enjoys this piece and is glad to be performing it with Manoukian.

The orchestra will also perform J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major, which is a collection of dances from the Baroque to late Renaissance periods.

The PCO will conclude its concert with Antonin Dvorak's Czech Suite, which Meyer said is also a collection of dances.

"His music is based on Czech folk tunes and in one of the movements there's a Czech hymn that everyone seems to recognize," Meyer said.

The orchestra will also hold a penny concert at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Park Forest Middle School, featuring a few movements from Bruch's violin concerto and Dvorak's suite.

The concert will last a half-hour and admission is only a penny.
