'Tubaween' to showcase student instrumentalists

Adding to the Halloween festivities already brewing in State College, the talents of "select" instrumentalists will be showcased at the first tuba and euphonium studio of the semester, "Tubaween."

Velvet Brown, director of the studio and associate professor of music, said since the first tuba and euphonium studio for many groups takes place during October, there has been a national play-on-words for the month, also known as "Octuba" to musicians across the nation.

The tuba and euphonium group has received nationwide status and has performed at many invitation-only conferences, Brown said.

She said the group has been to conferences in Washington, D.C., Denver, Colo., and is preparing to go to a conference in Cincinnati, Ohio later this year.

The group has been preparing for this studio since the beginning of the school year.

"We've been rehearsing every Wednesday evening since the beginning of the semester," Brian Edwards, graduate student and tuba player in the studio, said.

Brown said the group is selected by audition and often the musicians are not in the School of Music. She also said this year, there is only one student not majoring in music in the studio, but the numbers of different major students varies from year to year.

Composed of eight tuba players, seven euphonium players and one percussionist, the instrumentalists have an interesting mix of songs, ranging from "Ecco mormorar l'onde" to the "Addam's Family."

Edwards said the first half of the program is comprised of traditional music, whereas the second half of it is playful. The latter portion of the studio is more pop and jazz infused along with some rap influences.

"There are songs from the 1600s all the way up to songs from 2005," Brown said. Edwards said he hopes the turnout will be large and expects 75 to 100 people will attend the studio.

Brown said the group has great music fans and expects both community members as well as students to attend.
