Campus notes

The Dialog Forum, a student organization at Penn State, will host an event from 7 to 9:30 tonight in Schwab Auditorium. The event, Whirling Dervishes of Rumi, is free.

New York painter Peter Drake will give a free public lecture at 2:30 p.m. today in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium in the Palmer Museum of Art. The school of Visual Arts' John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series will sponsor Drake's lecture, "Breakdown, Decay as Metaphor."

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering will host a seminar at 10 a.m. today in 333 Information Sciences and Technology Building. Susan Hohenberger of Johns Hopkins University will speak about "Authentication for Pervasive Communications."

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering will host a speech, "Methods for Synthesizing Grafted Chains on Surfaces" at 10:10 a.m. today in 26 Hosler Building. William Brittain of Bausch & Lomb will speak.

Penn State's Peter Spaeth will speak at 12 p.m. today in 114 McAllister Building. The Department of Mathematics will host the speech, "C^0 Symplectic Topology: Part Four."

Scott Strobel of Yale University will speak at 12:30 p.m. today in 102 Chemistry Building. Phillip C. Bevilacqua of the Department of Chemistry will host the event, titled "Enzymology of the Ribosomal-Peptidyl-Transferase Reaction."

Jingguang G. Chen of the University of Delaware will speak about "Correlating and Predicting Electronic and Catalytic Properties of Bimetallic Alloys," at 2:30 p.m. today in 110 Wartik Laboratory.

Dmitry Khavinson of the University of South Florida will speak at 2:30 p.m. today in 113 McAllister Building about "From the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra to Astrophysics: A 'Harmonious' Journey." The Department of Mathematics will host the event.

Steve Hair will speak at 2:30 p.m. today in 106 McAllister Building about "On Relative Coarse Cohomology." The Department of Mathematics will host the event.

Peihua Qiu of the University of Minnesota will speak about the "Comparison of Two Possibly Crossing Hazard-Rate Functions" at 4 p.m. today in 201 Thomas Building. The Department of Statistics will host the event.

Penn State's Brett Carpenter will speak about the "Friction properties of San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) Materials" at 4 p.m. today in 202 Research West Building. The Department of Geosciences will host the seminar.

The Department of Mathematics will host a seminar at 4 p.m. today in 114 McAllister Building. Joshua Plotkin of the University of Pennsylvania will speak about "Inferring Evolution from DNA."

University of Wisconsin's Susan Coppersmith will speak at 4 p.m. today in 117 Osmond Laboratory. Moses Chan of the Department of Physics will host the event, titled "Ordering in Red Abalone Nacre."

Olivia Martius of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology will speak at 4 p.m. today in 112 Walker Building. The Department of Meteorology will host the event.

Penn State's Paul Baum will speak at 5 p.m. today in 106 McAllister Building. The Department of Mathematics will host the event.
