Museum to offer open house

Behind the lion's paws and colorful walkway of the Palmer Museum are a variety of art and resources for students to discover.

So for those who have never visited the building, the museum is sponsoring an afternoon of activities and crafts at their annual Community Day tomorrow.

The event kicks off at 1 p.m. and will continue until 4. Admission is free.

Dana Kletchka, education curator at the Palmer, said the museum will hand out free T-shirts in addition to holding fabric decorating stations, art activities, gallery talks, exhibitions and refreshments.

The Tussey Mountain Moonshiners, a bluegrass folk group, will be performing live during the event on the plaza, Kletchka said.

Kletchka said the activities will be spread throughout the museum and the plaza.

Three art exhibitions will also be on display inside the museum: Thomas Hart Benton and American Waterways, American Drawings and American Scenery.

Museum volunteers will be answering questions and holding gallery discussions about the exhibitions, Kletchka said.

There will also be free Peachy Paterno and chocolate Berkey Creamery ice cream available to participants in the museum lobby, she said.

"This is Palmer's biggest event of the year," she said. "There's always been a healthy attendance. We are expecting anywhere from 600 to 1,000 people."

This year, Community Day also happens to fall on Penn State's parents and families' weekend, Kletchka said.

"We wanted to make sure Palmer was well represented during the family activities," she said.
Kletchka said that although the activities are geared toward parents and out-of-towners, students and State College residents are encouraged to attend.

The event was planned for the "broadest variety of people," she said.

Kletchka said the event highlights Palmer's significant role at Penn State.

"The museum is an important resource and a fun place to visit," she said.

Community Day allows students and their families to know how Palmer can help students, whether it be an assignment for class or just for some quiet and relaxation, Kletchka said.

She encouraged all students to see what the museum has to offer.

"Everyone should stop by Community Day," she said. "It will be informative and fun."
