Police arraign man for attempted theft
Pennsylvania State Police said in a press release a Philipsburg man was arraigned Wednesday for twice attempting to hold up two Centre County convenience stores, succeeding the second time when police said he made off with $160.
Clayton Jeffrey Shaw, 23, has been charged with robbery, criminal attempt, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property and simple assault following two incidents earlier this week, state police said.
At 11:45 p.m. last Monday, state police said Shaw entered a Uni-Mart along Route 322 east of Philipsburg with a white shirt over his head and demanded money from the clerk, who recognized his voice. The clerk yelled out Shaw's name, and Shaw fled the store, police said.
At 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, Shaw went into a Minit Mart on North Front Street in Philipsburg with his head covered by the same white shirt and demanded money. Shaw brandished a knife, and the clerk handed over $160, state police said.
Witnesses observed Shaw fleeing the Minit Mart in a tan Chevy Astro van, and an investigation by several state troopers led to Shaw's arrest, state police said. He was arraigned before District Judge Thomas Jordan and held in lieu of $50,000 straight bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 19.
