Penn State routs Florida International in opener

Anthony Morelli was 23 of 38 for 295 yards and three touchdowns,

leading Penn State's season-opening 59-0 rout of Florida International

today at Beaver Stadium.

In Joe Paterno's first game on the sideline since suffering a broken

leg at Wisconsin, Morelli and the Nittany Lions kept alive momentum

from last year's Outback Bowl upset against Tennessee.

And the Lions can now finally focus on next week's highly anticipated

matchup against Notre Dame.

Before 107,678 fans, Morelli set or matched career highs in passing

yards and touchdowns. He set a first-half school record with 231

passing yards.

Penn State thoroughly pounded FIU, running up the score in a 28-0

third quarter. The Lions outgained FIU 210 - -3 on the ground and 313

- 117 through the air.

Penn State's defense was stifling. Sean Lee, who had seven tackles,

led the defense.
