Spikes fall to Muckdogs in extras

Batavia right fielder Jonathan Edwards pounded a solo home run in the 11th inning last night to tally the eventual game-winning run in a 7-6 win against State College.

Edwards smacked the 410-foot-plus bomb over the right-center field fence at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park off of Spikes reliever Jorge Charry to put an end to the longest game of State College's season. The game ran four hours and 10 minutes.

State College (32-34) committed a team-record six errors during the contest, each one recorded by a different member of the squad. State College starting pitcher Kyle McPherson went five innings, giving up 10 hits and five runs. Only two of those runs were earned, as the Spikes committed three errors in the first three innings.

Both teams were on the seesaw for much of the game, as the Spike quickly fell behind 3-0 in the third inning.

But in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runners in scoring position, shortstop Brandon Friday was pushed into a full count. After fouling off a flurry of pitches, Friday finally connected to drive a ball into left field. Both runners scored to give the Spikes at 5-3 lead.

The Muckdogs immediately answered in the top of the fifth, as first baseman Andrew Brown pounded out a triple to drive in a run. Batavia center fielder Tommy Pham would then produce an RBI single to knot the score at 5-5.

Spikes reliever Daniel Moscos, the Pirates' first round pick in the 2007 draft and No. 4 selection overall, would come in to replace McPherson in the sixth inning, only to allow a run to let the Muckdogs get ahead, 6-5. But, as was the case throughout the game, the lead was not safe.
In the seventh inning, Spikes catcher Andrew Walker knocked a line-drive in front of Muckdog center fielder Tommy Pham. Despite a well-executed relay throw, State College's Keanon Simon slid nicely under a tag at home plate to tie the score at 6-6.

The call was contested by Batavia coach Mike Shildt, who was ejected after a long argument with the ump.
