Alleged robber facing theft charges

A State College man charged with three counts of theft, three counts of receiving stolen property and 31 counts of access device fraud waived his preliminary hearing at the Centre County courthouse yesterday.

George S. Patton, 32, of 147 Azalea Drive, stole ATM cards from his fiancée, her mother and her mother's live-in boyfriend, using them to withdraw funds and make purchases totaling $2,494, police said.

Patton faces additional charges in connection to a string of 10 armed robberies and two attempted that occurred in late July through mid-August, including robbery, criminal conspiracy, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, according to court documents.

Patton's pretrial conference is scheduled for Nov. 20. He is currently being held in the Centre County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail.

HUB to hold World Cultural Festival

Tomorrow, the Paul Robeson Cultural Center and the Student Programming Association will host the World Cultural Festival on the HUB-Robeson Center lawn from 5 to 9 p.m. Students, faculty and State College residents are invited to come join in on salsa lessons, live performances and food -- free of charge.

The cultural festival will feature a global bazaar with international food samples, student organization information booths, culturally educational displays, arts and crafts, live dance demonstrations with lessons, and a grill sponsored by Java Co. with free burgers and hotdogs.

There will also be live cultural performances from various student organizations such as the Penn State International Dance Ensemble, LAMB Squad and the Ballroom Dance Club.

In the event of rain, the festival portion of the event will be canceled; however, a concert would be held at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall inside the HUB-Robeson Center in its place.

Yellowcard to play at Cellblock

Music fans yearning for the long-lost days of the Crowbar can stop holding their breath: Yellowcard will play an all-ages show at the Cell Block, 420 E. College Ave., at the end of the month.

On Sept. 29, the pop-punk ban notable for its use of a violin and its hit "Ocean Avenue" will return to State College for the first time since headlining a concert at the Bryce Jordan Center in 2004. Tickets to the show, which is part of the Blue October Tour, will be $20 and are available at the Cell Block and online at www.ticketweb.com.

The band has had a steady decline in record sales since then, but nevertheless has a double platinum album and a gold album to its name, 2004's Ocean Avenue and its 2006 follow-up, Lights and Sounds.

The show will feature opening bands, but those bands have yet to be announced. The Blue October Tour features Shiny Toy Guns and Ozma, but Shiny Toy Guns is scheduled for a concert in Vermont on the night of the Cell Block show. Ozma has an open date.
