Two Penn State football players cited for underage drinking

The Athletic Department offered no comment on possible disciplinary action that Andrew Quarless and Willie Harriott may face on the field.

Two Penn State football players were issued citations for underage drinking early Friday in the area outside Nittany Apartments, University Police said.

Sophomore tight end Andrew Quarless and sophomore cornerback Willie Harriott were cited shortly before 3 a.m. in the area outside Nittany Apartments Building 12, according to the police report. Another student, Heather Ann Hirneisen, was with the two players and was also cited for underage drinking, police said.

University police were responding to an unrelated call about suspicious activity in the area when they found the three students and determined that they had been drinking, said University Police Lt. Bill Moerschbacher. He added that he had access only to preliminary reports and did not know the students' blood-alcohol content at the time they were cited.

Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson said the athletic department is aware of the incident, but would not comment on possible disciplinary action. Guido D'Elia, a team spokesman, was also reached by phone Friday afternoon, and said the team did not yet have enough information to discuss the incident publicly.

During last season, his first with the Nittany Lions, Quarless played in 11 games, catching 21 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, including a touchdown catch in Penn State's Outback Bowl win over Tennessee.

Harriott redshirted in 2005 and saw his first action in 2006, playing in Penn State's 47-0 win over Temple.
