As the weather begins to break and days grow longer, Happy Valley is beginning to look and feel like spring. With warm weather comes long days on the HUB lawn and plenty of procrastination, students said.
The sun's shining rays can hold a powerful force over these students, causing them to neglect their schoolwork and enjoy time relaxing outside.
Nate Romig (freshman-physics) said he "definitely" does less homework when weather gets warm. When he isn't doing work, he opts for any outdoor activity, especially soccer. However, he said he still manages to attend his classes.
Some students, though, said they find the nice weather persuades them to miss a class or two and enjoy a sunny day.
Anne Neuhaus (sophomore-international politics) said she sees a difference in her class attendance during the warmer spring months.
"When there are warm days in the fall I'll still go [to class] because it is the beginning of the year... At the end of the year, not so much," Neuhaus said.
The near-empty libraries are also a sign of the comfortable weather.
Robin Peterson, reference assistance at the Social Sciences Library said, "there's been a noticeable decrease" in the number of students spending time in university libraries.
Peterson believes this decrease is a combination of the nice weather and the semester coming to a close.
Although the HUB lawn is a popular place for students to spend time outside, some people find alternate locations that are more suitable for an afternoon nap.
Jeff Sell (sophomore-animal biological science) said he likes to take naps between classes when the weather is nice. Sell has his own "sleep spot" in front of Old Main.
He also finds warm weather gives him a boost and he makes it to class, although after class he puts work aside and opts for an afternoon Frisbee game.
It's understandable students want to enjoy warm weather after a long winter, but work still needs to be done, said Faith Miller, learning skills coordinator at the University Learning Center.
Miller said she understands seeing other students spending time outside can make anyone eager for summer, but there are still ways to get work done while being outside.
"Students can take their reading outside and get some sun while still getting work done," Miller said.
Miller also cited laptops and other technological advances as great for taking work outside. Warm weather can also be used as a reward to motivate students to complete their work, she added.
"If you space your time out and avoid cramming, then you can go out and enjoy yourself later," she said.
Miller also reminded students that the semester is almost over and students have the entire summer to look forward to.
