UPUA appoints leaders within

The University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) appointed members and students to several leadership positions within the organization at its meeting last night.

Former President Jay Chamberlin was appointed as chairman of the internal development committee, which takes charge of matters within the association, such as writing bylaws or an election code.

Chamberlin said he would continue the committee's work in trying to amend the constitution.

He said he would also work on establishing a five-year plan for UPUA, which "ties the current association to future associations."

John Richter, former internal development committee chairman, was appointed governmental affairs committee chairman.

President Hillary Lewis added that she was strongly in favor of Richter.

"He's going to rock governmental affairs," Lewis said. "He's a fervent political science major."

Former presidential candidate Ricardo Torres was appointed as Lewis' chief of staff. Lewis called Torres "one of the smartest people [she knows]."

Hillary Gupta was appointed chairwoman of the special events and programming committee, which she was a member of during last semester.

Two committee chairs were appointed only for this summer, Pat Gordon as facilities committee chairman and Katelyn Holmes as academic affairs chairwoman.

Holmes was appointed to the position over Richard Shermanski, college of liberal arts representative, also ran for the position. Richter spoke in favor of Holmes.

"The academic affairs chair is our face to the faculty," he said. "She was the voice of reason in a lot of our [internal development] committee meetings."

The diversity and campus relations committee chairperson was not appointed, because one of the candidates for the position, Nicole Barrett, was not in attendance at the leadership meeting to present her case.
