The Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K Walk/Run, which honors the former Penn State student who died at Virginia Tech two weeks ago, will begin at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Intramural Building.

Registration for the race is $10, and all proceeds go to the United Way Memorial Fund for Jeremy Herbstritt, which benefits his family.

Those who wish to participate can print out an application form on Penn State's civil engineering Web site or register at the Intramural building from 1 to 1:45 p.m. tomorrow.

Herbstritt, who graduated with honors from Penn State last year, earned degrees in civil and environmental engineering, biochemistry and molecular biology. He was also an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and received the Dean Meyers Memorial Scholarship in Civil Engineering in 2005.

He was doing graduate work in civil engineering at Virginia Tech at the time of his death.

The department of civil engineering, the ASCE and the Office of Physical Plant (OPP), where Hebstritt's father works as an engineer, are sponsoring the race.

Kris Murchie (graduate-civil engineering), an event organizer, said the idea came from Heather Wittmer, a former "study buddy" of Herbstritt who now lives in Arizona.

"Because he was such an avid runner, we thought the best idea would be to hold a race in his name," Murchie said. "We want to honor him and also help out the family in any way we can."

There are more than 100 people already registered for the event, Murchie said, adding that she expects many more to sign up tomorrow.

"We are hoping for a big turnout," Murchie said. "This is something we would like to put together annually."

Engineering professor Jay Regan, another event organizer, said Herbstritt worked as his teaching assistant last year.

"He was a good kid," Regan said. "We wanted to hold an event in his honor, and this is something he probably would have participated in."

Herbstritt's three younger siblings, two of whom attend Penn State, are also runners, Regan said.

Ed Gannon, an OPP manager and close friend of the Herbstritt family, said he had spoken with Herbstritt's father on Wednesday evening.

"They're going to do the best that they can to make it out," Gannon said. "I know they want to be here, but they had some prior obligations."

The United Way Memorial Fund for Jeremy Herbstritt was established by the OPP, Centre County United Way and the Nittany Bank, 116 E. College Ave., shortly after his death, according to a news release from Penn State. One hundred percent of the donations will go to the family.

Those who cannot run in the race and wish to donate to the fund can do so at www.ccunitedway.org. All donations should be marked to "The Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial Fund."
