Let's face it. In a college town, T-shirts are the universal uniform and are acceptable apparel for most occasions.
Luckily, in this college town, there are many options of where to go and to find a variety of shirts.
"People need shirts," said Brian Hamman, owner of Spotted Lizard Printing and Graphics.
The store itself, which is located at 105 W. Cherry Lane in Bellefonte, is an Internet-based T-shirt business.
Their Web site, www.spotted-lizard.com, allows a client to custom design their shirts online and offers free delivery in about six days.
Hamman said he knows their prices are very low compared to other local stores because they check them each month.
"We're getting business just because we do better business," he said.
If you're looking for a shirt in about 24 hours, People's Nation may be the place for you.
Located at 126 E. College Ave., it offers two options for custom printing. After selecting a shirt in the store, a customer can select pre-designed images or they can create their own from scratch.
"We get a lot of funny shirts, from the most vulgar to the most hilarious," People's Nation employee Faith Saluga (senior-psychology) said.
Katie Wagner (sophomore-crime, law and justice) said one of her favorite shirts was "I f***ed your valentine."
"That was a classy one," she said.
The two employees said the State College Borough told the store not to display a "Happy F***in Valley" shirt in their window and that alumni have complained about some shirts and how they reflect on Penn State.
Saluga said the shirts generally cost between $25 and $35. She added that Chuck Norris shirts have been very popular. She said they usually print individual shirts whereas other stores print more in bulk.
Although the store claims it will print anything a client brings in, People's Nation, along with Spotted Lizard Printing and Graphics are not licensed to print certain Penn State logos.
But have no fear Nittany Lion fans, Transfer Junction Greek specialty shop, located at 421 E. Beaver Ave., is allowed to print these graphics.
While it is a greek supplies store, it prints more than just greek T-shirts.
Manager Aaron Strogen said they print a variety of shirts, including intramural sports teams, the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), homecoming and bar tours.
In addition to these group orders, a customer can get an individual shirt printed.
Strogen said the demand is seasonal.
"Before spring break it's always St. Patty's Day shirts, and now it's bar tours," he said. "Business is good [right now] but in a couple of weeks, downtown will be like a New England beach in winter."
Strogen said the pricing varies by order and depends on the quantity and design, but he mentioned that regular customers can get better prices.
He also said the turnover time takes about a week for each order, and the store, based out of Altoona, does its own work.
The Family Clothesline, located at 352 E. College Ave., is also licensed to print Penn State icons. They print a minimum of 12 garments per order and the order is usually ready in about two weeks.
The store's floor manager Caroline Mangam said they have an experienced graphics designer who is very creative and offers cost-efficient advice.
"Pretty much as creative as you want to be is the limit," she said. "Whatever you can imagine, we can do."
