Lions must testify
Thirteen PSU football players are being called to Friday's hearing about an alleged assault.

Thirteen Penn State football players will testify at a preliminary hearing Friday, as local authorities try to piece together the events of an April 1 apartment invasion that resulted in six other Nittany Lions being charged with felonies.

Forty people total will be called to testify.

The players called to testify are: Jedediah Hill, Knowledge Timmons, Nicholas Pinchek, Deon Butler, Brennan Coakley, Tom Golarz, Michael Lucian, Bani Gbadyu, Austin Hinton, Richard Ohrnberger, Matt Hahn, Dan Connor and Lou Eliades.

The six charged players -- Anthony Scirrotto, Chris Baker, Jerome Hayes, Justin King, Tyrell Sales and Lydell Sargeant -- were arrested Friday in connection with a fight in a third-floor Meridian II apartment, 646 E. College Ave., in the early morning hours of April 1.

The fight stemmed from an earlier confrontation on the street that involved Scirrotto and his female friend, State College police said.

Although a number of players were mentioned in court documents and are listed to testify Friday, no other athletes are facing charges.

Hayes said he, Coakley, Butler, Sargeant, Baker, Timmons, King, a Penn State recruit and a few women were in Coakley's room at Nittany Apartments when Sargeant received a call from Scirrotto about the street altercation, according to court documents.

Hayes told police that he, Baker, King, Timmons, Golarz and Sargeant drove down to Hooters, located near the Meridian, to meet Scirrotto, according to court documents.

Hayes told police that players Lucian and Pinchek also were present downtown and when he pulled up, he saw "a mob."

Scirrotto told police Sargeant may have been a person who struck one of the victims later during the alleged fight, according to court documents. Scirrotto, who is charged with simple assault, denied being involved in the fight to the police.

King told police Timmons went inside the apartment during the fight, according to court documents. Timmons is the only person who received a subpoena to testify who was mentioned in police documents as entering the apartment.

At a press conference Friday, Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said law enforcement used the threshold of the apartment door to determine whom would have charges filed against them.

Butler and the recruit came down to the area but stayed inside a nearby McDonald's, Hayes told police. Butler never entered the Meridian apartment, King said.

None of the other players subpoenaed were mentioned in the police documents.

Scirrotto is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault, harassment and two counts of criminal solicitation.

Baker is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and harassment.

The four other players are all charged with criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and harassment.

No additional people will be charged in connection with the incident before Friday's hearing because preliminary hearings must be held within a three to 10 day period following an individual's arrest, Madeira said.

Students Bernd Imle and Thomas Skalamera, who were cited for their alleged involvement in the street confrontation, will also testify Friday. All four residents of the Meridian apartment are also scheduled to take the stand.

State College Detective Steve Bosak declined to comment about the case yesterday. Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane, who is handling the case for the commonwealth, could not be reached.
