I was personally surprised that it took so long for the Collegian to print an anti-gun piece ("Gun owner database necessary for safety," April 30). I was fully expecting one, two or three days after the Virginia Tech shootings. Anyway, the editorial's conclusions are completely wrong.
Gun owners aren't wary of registration for privacy's sake. They are wary of it because throughout history it has always been the first step to banning guns.
On top of that, the number of legal guns used in crimes in Philadelphia is extremely low, and you no longer have a "common sense" piece of legislation but something that can and will take away citizen's rights in the future. However, those who have and purchase guns illegally will still be unaffected.
The conclusion drawn from the second piece of the bill is downright hilarious. If Jodi Barone had been allowed to purchase a gun to protect herself, she might still be alive today.
But because of liberal ideas like this editorial, Jodi Barone never got a chance to defend herself.
