A season full of disappointment has finally come to an end for the Penn State women's golf team.
The Nittany Lions ended the Big Ten Championship in 10th place out of 11 teams yesterday. No one from the Penn State team qualified for the NCAA Championship.
Michigan State, No. 22 in the nation, took home the victory. Following the Spartans was No. 12 Purdue, taking home second place, and No. 33 Northwestern, capturing a third-place victory.
"We are all obviously pretty disappointed, finishing at the bottom of the pack," junior Christin Pacacha said.
Pacacha struggled with getting distance on her shot the first day of the tournament.
The already long and challenging course was even tougher this weekend after Michigan was pounded with an inch and a half of rain.
Pacacha said hitting off the tee was especially difficult, since the ball wasn't rolling once it hit the damp ground.
Despite the rough conditions, this weekend's tournament was a memorable one for the two seniors on the team, Maggie Lester and Evelyn Paik.
Both golfers played their last tournaments as Penn State students this weekend.
"I'm very sad but I'm excited too," Lester said. "It's a closing chapter."
Lester said she had a good time at her last competition as a Lion and is proud of her performance, she finished No. 26 with a score of 26-over 314.
Lester said she wasn't upset with the team's performance this season, but it was disappointing knowing how hard everyone worked at their game.
"We had goals set in the beginning," she said. "We know we put our best foot forward and gave our best effort. We can't feel too badly."
Lester said she is upset that she will have to leave Penn State and her love of golf.
"I wish I could keep going with it," she said.
Her plans after graduation are to move back to her hometown, Toronto, Canada, and work with her coach at golf clinics.
She hopes to continue practicing, playing and "hopefully taking it to the next level."
