Paul Posluszny speaks for himself and four other former Penn State football players when describing the anxiety he's felt leading up to tomorrow's NFL draft.
Suddenly, the workouts and interviews the players have been subject to the past couple months are small worries compared to what will be decided this weekend, namely where each will be spending the near future.
"We just want to know who we're going to be playing for and where we're going to be living," Posluszny said yesterday.
The All-America linebacker -- along with offensive tackle Levi Brown, running back Tony Hunt, linebacker Tim Shaw and defensive lineman Jay Alford -- is among those likely to be selected during the draft, which begins at noon tomorrow at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Brown and Posluszny have been projected by many draft analysts to be selected in the first round of the seven-round event that runs through Sunday, with Brown a possible top-10 pick.
Posluszny said he expects to be selected somewhere between pick No. 15 (Pittsburgh Steelers) and the beginning of the second round, which begins with pick No. 33.
"Where or what team? I'm not really sure," said Posluszny, who said he plans to watch the draft on television with family at home.
Hunt and Shaw are both considered probable third-round picks, according to Rob Rang, senior analyst for NFLdraftscout.com, whose mock draft also appears on cbs.sportsline.com. Alford will likely be picked in the middle rounds, Rang said.
Shaw, who played defensive end last season for the Nittany Lions but will play linebacker in the NFL, said he doesn't know where he will be picked, but he hopes it is "as soon as possible."
Shaw said he has been feeling especially uneasy since performing before scouts and coaches during a private workout with the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago.
"It's starting to get to me," Shaw said yesterday while driving home to Livonia, Mich., where he will watch the draft with his family. "Just not knowing where you're going, where am I going to live for the next few years."
Shaw, Posluszny, Brown and Alford have all been working out together in State College this spring, keeping in shape while waiting for this weekend to arrive.
Collectively, Shaw said the group is anxious and excited to know where it will be living and playing. Shaw said even Brown, who is expected to be one of the first 10 players selected, still has reasons to be nervous.
"I'm not sure if it's as stressful for him, but he still doesn't know what city he's going to end up in," Shaw said.
As for himself, Shaw said he would be relieved when the draft process he called a "crazy ride" is over.
"So many things that you never think have to do with football are very important in this process," Shaw said. "Overall it's been stressful, but it's my dream."
