Lewis says she will be more than greek

Collegian Staff Writer

If confirmed as president, Hillary Lewis would be the first greek student government president since 1994-95 Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Mike King.

Lewis, a member of Pi Beta Phi, said she hopes her high-profile role in UPUA will inspire more greeks to care about student government and other activities outside of greek life.

"A lot of greeks just focus their college career, on Panhellenic [Council], [Interfraternity Council] IFC and Thon," she said. "Hopefully, this will show people here and at all universities that greeks can contribute, and they can contribute a lot to their school."

Lewis said UPUA's goal is "to be here for all organizations." She said it was "absolutely absurd" to say she would favor greek organizations over other organizations.

Abe Gitterman, president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, 328 E. Fairmount Ave., said the election of Lewis and Keller "reflects the effect that greeks have as leaders in our community."

Gitterman said Keller's experience with greek councils, which he called "extremely efficient," would bring greater structure to UPUA. Keller is a member of Kappa Alpha and is currently IFC executive vice president.

Lewis said the turnout of the elections could be attributed in part to an increased turnout from fraternities and sororities.

Daniel Hadas and his running mate Michael Barasch, both members of fraternities, came in third place in the UPUA elections. Hadas and Lewis, combined, received 2,834 out of 5,936 votes.

Panhellenic Council President Stephanie Kender said it is "exciting for [Lewis and Keller] to have this opportunity to lead," and their administration would show greeks care about the "interests of Penn State in general."

Grant Miller, IFC president, agreed Lewis' presidency would help encourage greeks to participate in activities outside of greek life, though he stressed that many already do. He said a greek president and vice president would bring a valuable "diversity of opinion, diversity of experience."

Miller said he thought Lewis and Keller would do a good job.

"She's just a great leader, doing some wonderful things -- same thing with Frank [Keller]," he said.

One thing Gitterman said he wants UPUA to do next year is to act as a check on greek councils. Currently, Gitterman said the administration exercises jurisdiction. He said dealing with the administration "frustrates [him] a lot," and he'd rather have "students being the mediators."

Additionally, Gitterman said Lewis and Keller's experience with a "diverse group of people" would help them in leading UPUA.

"They're going to be there to listen to every single student because that's what you do in a fraternity or a sorority," he said.
