Penn State Altoona University Police closed a campus recreation facility yesterday after receiving a bomb threat Wednesday afternoon.
"The word 'bomb' was actually used," Penn State Altoona spokeswoman Shari Routch said.
The letter, which is being analyzed for forensic evidence, arrived at a campus office and was immediately turned over to the police. Routch described it as "a nebulous letter threatening an incident" early this morning at the Adler Building, a recreation facility on Altoona's campus.
Preliminary sweeps of the building conducted yesterday morning revealed no abnormalities. Classes were not canceled, under the advice of police advisers.
Tyrone Parham, assistant director for police operations at University Park, said that his department was consulted by Penn State Altoona officers.
"We were made aware of it yesterday and talked about some strategies to make sure everyone's safe down there," he said, adding that no University Park police have been dispatched to the scene.
Routch reported that members of the Pennsylvania State Police K-9 Unit, assisted by the Penn State Altoona University Police and Logan Township Police, made a "thorough search" of the Adler Building yesterday evening and found nothing of a "threatening nature."
Routch said that the incident has sparked a 40-percent increase in the PSUTXT subscribers at Altoona, with the service gaining 120 new members throughout Wednesday alone.
PSUTXT allows the university to send up-to-the-minute news updates to subscribers' cell phones.
"We're just encouraging everyone to sign up," she said.
The Adler Building will remained closed until 8 this morning. Security around the facility and the general campus was increased last night as a precaution.
