Penn State greek life made a big splash last night while competing in Delta Gamma's annual Anchor Splash fundraiser in McCoy Natatorium.
Seven fraternities and sororities participated in raising money for Service for Sight, an organization that gives aid to the blind and visually impaired. Service for Sight has been Delta Gamma sorority's national philanthropy since 1936.
Each Delta Gamma member was responsible for earning $200 to contribute to this event. The sorority also held a jeans sale to benefit the same cause, which added $250 to their goal. Additional funds were earned through an $80 registration fee mandatory for competing teams. Total funds raised were not tallied by last night.
Swimmers got warmed up for the events by swimming laps and adjusting speedos, swim caps and goggles.
"I am looking forward to the goofy [relays] because they don't really require any skill," said Rachel Litwak (sophomore-finance), a Delta Gamma swimmer.
Alpha Xi Delta won the "bathing beauties" portion for the second year in a row, beating out three other sororities for the trophy. Members of Sigma Nu fraternity, 340 N. Burrowes Road, were the champions of the event, after going undefeated for the entire relay competition.
"We had a lot of fun, and it's for a good cause," said Mike Gordon (senior-chemical engineering), member of Sigma Nu's team.
In the relay-style events, swimmers had to swim with noodles, inner tubes and while wearing a sweatshirt.
One representative from each team attempted to make the biggest splash in order to win a free massage. These awards went to Alpha Xi Delta and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, 346 E. Prospect Ave. "I think the teams had a lot of fun. A couple people got free massages so I know they are happy," said Kelsey Hudock, a chairwoman of the event.
