PSU to attempt largest kick line

Collegian Staff Writer

At Penn State, you don't have to travel to New York or be a woman to have a try as a Rockette.

At 3 p.m. tomorrow on the HUB lawn, the Penn State Dance Program, along with anyone else interested, will attempt to create the world's biggest kick line during National Dance Week.

The kick line world record that is currently being recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records took place in Ontario, Canada.

For the dance company and the community of State College to break the record, more than 1,600 dancers must participate, Elisha Clark, the head of the dance program at Penn State, said.

But breaking the record is not the company's main goal.

"The Guinness Book of Records is kind of a side thing," Raven Cauthon (senior-management), a dancer in the company and the group's public relations officer, said.

"If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't."

Clark said she doesn't know if the record will even be set this year. She said it may take a couple of years before Penn State breaks the record but recognition for the dance company is more important for her.

This year's kick line won't be the first time the three-year-old dance company has celebrated National Dance Week. Last year, the dancers tried to get people in the community to dance along, but not everyone was willing. Clark said she hopes the nature of a kick line will be more inspiring for non-performers to get involved.

"It's something that people who aren't necessarily dancers can do," Clark said.

The record will be determined by taking plenty of pictures, counting heads and signatures stating that dancers were present at the kick line, Cauthon said.

Clark said this event will be good for the community and for the dancers.

"We're so serious about things," Clark said. She said the fun nature of a long kick line should lighten it up a bit.

"It's silly. It's a silly record to set, but it's fun," she said.
