The theme for the event is A Colorful Stroke of Genius with songs like "Purple People Eater" and "Rainbow Connection."

The skaters range in age and experience, from the "tots" class of 3 to 6 year olds to the students in the kinesiology classes who have just begun skating at the beginning of the semester.

"[The kinesiology students] are doing a giant pinwheel, so they're excited," said Amy Torcasso, director of the Penn State Skating School and coordinator of the show.

"Some of the girls on the pro staff are brilliant. They can skate. They're awesome."

The show is the culminating event for the spring session of all the classes, conducted by a professional staff, which employs some Penn State students as coaches. Kristin Holsing (sophomore-kinesiology) coaches group and private lessons at the ice rink and helped coordinate the adult class performance.

She will also be skating a solo to The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black."

"I've been skating since I was six," she said. "I'm from State College, so I've skated in this rink forever."

So, has Laura Kottlowski (senior-graphic design), who also grew up in State College.

"This is actually my 15th ice show. I've been a coach for the past four years," she said.

Kottolowski is also performing a solo to a song by Amos Lee that she calls a "nice, solemn number."

"It's paying tribute to my time at the rink and moving on to the next chapter of my life," she said.

She added that she hopes to continue skating after she moves to Colorado to begin a job in graphic design.

"It's definitely a lifelong sport that I hope to stick with," she said.

Tickets for the Penn State Ice Rink showcase will cost $12 for adults and $10 for youths, students and seniors.
