Fashion show to benefit charity

Collegian Staff Writer

For those who love fashion and lemonade, tonight is your night.

Starting at 7 p.m. in HUB Heritage Hall, the Penn State Marketing Association (PSMA) will present its first spring fashion runway show. There is a $2 fee to enter, paid to the lemonade stand at the entrance. The money will be donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand, a foundation that raises money for researching pediatric cancer.

Connections, 130 S. Allen St., Sydney Mac, 115 E. Beaver Ave., and Gia & Co., 114 S. Allen St., are the three participating downtown shops that will have their latest store fashions strutted down a faux runway.

Ashley Perry (senior-marketing), director of the retail committee in PSMA, said each store has picked about four women's outfits to be showcased by 16 models.

"I just kind of brainstormed with my committee about different things that would be relevant for people in retail to do and to involve the downtown stores and not big chains," she said.

Perry said because of the physical restrictions in Heritage Hall, there won't be an actual runway but instead they will set up chairs opposite of each other, alluding to one.

In addition to the runway show, there will be free raffles and performances by Penn State dance groups Tapestry, Whiplash and RAM Squad in between the store's fashion segments.

There will also be free food and, of course, free lemonade.

"I guess it's just a girl's day, with clothes and food," Perry said.

Katie Stuart (sophomore-marketing), a member of the PSMA retail committee, said she's been trying to help out with the event by asking various downtown businesses for gift certificates to give away and making fliers to help advertise the show.

"I'm pretty sure they are all going to be dresses because we are going to have a really fun spring theme," she said.

Samantha Hauger (junior-marketing), also a member of the retail committee, said the event is free publicity for the stores and a means to "get their name out there."

"Hopefully the girls will see something that they like and go out and buy it," she said. "I think it will be a fun event. There will be a lot of food and lemonade, it's only two dollars and it's something to do on a Wednesday night, and maybe you'll see something that you like."
