Whether the band would fit better in GQ or Rolling Stone remains to be seen, but if the band's past Roustabout! appearances are any indication, the crowd will enjoy the show regardless.
"Every time they've played, they've always been really good," Roustabout! promoter Jesse Ruegg said. "Interesting songs, interesting arrangements -- it's not your typical stuff. People always seem to respond to that. You can't just sit there and not get into it."
Ruegg said that the Sw!ms play fun, dance songs in a '60s psychedelic pop aesthetic.
Pat Finnerty, an unapologetic English major who usually plays for Roustabout! standby Okay Paddy and currently filling in on drums for the Sw!ms, described the band's live show as "Barnum & Bailey Circus meets Woodstock meets the Smothers Brothers."
Finn said the band's motto has been "give it to 'em loud, give it to 'em hard, give it to 'em fast."
"It's psychedelic pop infused with infectious melodies with a lot of 4/4 rhythms," Finn said. "It's the perfect blend of mature melodies with a pop sensibility, catchy melodies over raucous guitars and an insatiable live show."
Finn said the Sw!ms like playing in State College for two reasons.
"People pay attention to the music. There are always good rock 'n' roll crowds," Finn said. "And [the Darkhorse] gives us a free dinner."
The Roustabout! show was originally billed to be opened by the Explorers Club from Charleston, S.C., but after numerous cancellations, The Bullet Parade of State College is now lined up to open tonight's show.
