About 100 fraternity and sorority members met yesterday evening for a ceremony recognizing fellow greeks, triad winners, faculty and staff, which concluded a week's worth of Greek Week events.
The Faculty and Staff Appreciation Ceremony and Greek Week Trophy Ceremony were held at the Days Inn, 240 S. Pugh St.
"All four councils came together this past week to showcase their pride and learn from one another," Lauren Giovannitti, Greek Week programming chairwoman said.
Members from all four councils -- Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council (PHC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) -- were represented last night.
IFC President Grant Miller spoke on behalf of all four councils.
"Being greek means so much more than wearing letters," he said.
Miller said the councils are working on greek unity and the greek pride initiative to unify the greek community.
Each participating IFC fraternity was paired with a PHC sorority and either a MGC group or a NPHC group. These pairings, called triads, worked together to compete in the week's events.
This is the second year Greek Week has used triad pairings.
"I think the chapters really got to know each other a lot better," Annie Larimer, Greek Week overall chairwoman, said. "It was a great success."
Sigma Pi fraternity, Delta Gamma sorority and Zeta Phi Beta NPHC sorority were the winning triad. This triad also placed first in Friday's chariot race.
Fraternities and sororities from the first, second and third placing triad each received a golden trophy.
Economics professor Dirk Mateer was also recognized as someone the greek community considers an excellent faculty member.
"I had no idea this [award] was coming," Mateer said. "I teach large classes, so it's difficult to get to know everyone I'd like to."
Three chapters nominated Mateer for his certificate of appreciation.
Greek Week Rules and Regulations Chairwoman Kristin Schappell commended greeks for their work on Greek Week.
"You all did an amazing job," Schappell said. "And you should be proud to be a member of the greek community."
