White defeats Blue in front of orange and maroon

Collegian Staff Writer

The largest crowd — comprised largely of fans wearing maroon and orange — in Blue-White Game history saw the White team defeat the Blue team, 30-6.

The estimated 71,000 in attendance donned Virginia Tech's colors and observed a moment of silence before this afternoon's annual spring scrimmage at Beaver Stadium to honor the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy. The Blue Band, dressed in orange, also played a rendition of "Amazing Grace" and the blue and white "S" zone in the senior section was replaced with an orange and maroon "VT" zone.

Rising senior quarterback Anthony Morelli, who played for the Blue team, threw for 104 yards, no touchdowns and one interception on 11-for-18 passing.

Morelli, who was replaced after the first half, was crisp at times, but threw mostly flares and screens. His favorite targets were rising junior receivers Derrick Williams and Jordan Norwood, who each caught five balls for 54 yards.

With time waning in the first quarter, Morelli threw into a triangle of defenders and was intercepted by rising junior Mark Rubin only four yards from the end zone.

Rising senior running back Austin Scott of the Blue team rushed for 53 yards on 13 carries.

The White team's main running back, Evan Royster, rushed nine times for 45 yards and hit the holes quick and hard. Though he didn't break a run longer than 12 yards, he was effective in slicing through the Blue's defensive line.

The White team was also led by rising junior quarterback Paul Cianciolo, who had two touchdowns and threw for 126 yards, and rising junior linebacker Tyrell Sales, who had a game-high 11 tackles.
