Although Penn State is located hours away from the site of the Virginia Tech tragedy, students in Happy Valley are planning several ways to honor the victims during tomorrow's Blue-White football game.

According to a press release from the Penn State athletic department, a moment of silence will be observed before the game begins, and the Penn State Blue Band, clad in orange T-shirts, will play a tribute to the community of Virginia Tech followed by a "Let's Go, Hokies" cheer with the cheerleaders.

In addition, Penn State will provide 800 maroon and orange T-shirts to students sitting in the student section of Beaver Stadium tomorrow to form a giant "VT" symbol.

Sorority members of Phi Sigma Rho will be canning outside the stadium tomorrow to raise money to go toward a Virginia Tech charity.

Also, students can sign a banner in the HUB-Robeson Center throughout the week that will be sent to Virginia Tech.

Students waited in line for more than two hours to buy maroon and orange T-shirts yesterday at the Family Clothesline, 352 E. College Ave., saying they plan to wear them during the game as a tribute.

Many students emphasized their desire to show support for Virginia Tech.

"It's kind of overwhelming to think about. There are people there just like us. We're a month away from graduating," Zach Vosseler (senior-elementary education) said.

According to the press release, the Family Clothesline sold 2,000 shirts yesterday in about 30 minutes and the Family Clothesline's store coordinator, Tracy Bell, said the store plans to receive 10,000 more shirts today around noon.

"The first time I saw they were trying to [wear] orange and maroon instead of blue and white was on Facebook, and I thought it was a nice way to honor what happened," Rachel Marth (senior-crime, law and justice) said.

Daniela Lawton (freshman-biology) had been waiting in line for a maroon shirt for about 40 minutes. Lawton said she knows about 10 people from her high school who attend Virginia Tech.

"I got five [shirts] for friends that are coming up for the game," Lindsey Trolio (freshman-secondary education math) said when the shirts finally arrived.

Bell said all proceeds from the shirts will go to "The Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund."

"We want to make sure everyone who wants one gets one," Bell said.

The shirts are also available online for students at other campuses who want them at pennstateclothes.com.

The Penn State Bookstore will also be selling maroon and orange T-shirts, and all proceeds will go to Virginia Tech.
