PSU grads play Roustabout!

Collegian Staff Writer

It may be Blue and White Weekend, but for the bands playing tonight's all-ages Roustabout! at Chronic Town, 224 W. College Ave., it's more like homecoming.

Two of the bands, Creeping Weeds and Golden Ball, have members who graduated from Penn State.

Coincidentally, both bands are now based in the Fishtown area of Philadelphia. They will be joined on stage by State College band The Bullet Parade at 9 tonight.

The members of both Creeping Weeds and Golden Ball all have day jobs, but aside from that and their close proximity, the similarities end there.

Roustabout! promoter Jesse Ruegg compares Creeping Weeds to more angular rock groups such as Dinosaur Jr. and Gang of Four, while he said Golden Ball is more of a psych-pop band. The latter's lo-fi style has been compared to the likes of Elephant 6 bands such as Olivia Tremor Control.

Both bands have played State College several times, but neither has visited the hookah lounge since its name change last December.

But Pete Stewart, the lead vocalist/guitarist for Creeping Weeds, said the setup in Chronic Town meets his standards.

"We played there last summer when it was Tall Shiva," Stewart said. "We got to check it out the last time we were there. It looks really cool; the stage is really big."

That's not the only benefit of playing a show in State College, said David Chadwick, vocalist/guitarist for Golden Ball. He said there were a lot of perks as compared to playing in the band's hometown.

"The air's cleaner, there's more beer," Chadwick said. "When you're in a city like Philadelphia, there's a lot of great shows every week. You tend to lose sight of that after a while. As a performer sometimes, you don't get a lot of happy energy coming out of the audience, no matter where you go."

Both Creeping Weeds and Golden Ball will be playing new material, with both having just released albums in the past few months.
