In the wake of Monday's tragedy, it comes as no surprise that the gun control advocates are coming out of the wood work. These people claim making guns illegal will prevent these shootings from taking place and make our streets safer. However, they seem to forget an important concept.
The people who commit these crimes are criminals, and criminals will have guns regardless of their legality, as many already do. Banning guns or making tougher gun laws only removes guns from the hands of honest, law-abiding citizens. Guns should be owned by more Americans. Teachers and school administrators who have gone through the legal process should be allowed to carry guns into the work place. College students who have met the legal requirements should also be allowed to legally have guns on campus.
In addition, every high school and middle school should adopt a policy to have at least one gun and two or three faculty members trained to use it. Some argue that the gun could fall into the wrong hands. If we can trust school administrators with the care and education of the nation's youth, why can't we trust them to be responsible and keep a gun away from those same children?
If Columbine High School had this policy, maybe only two people would have died instead of thirteen. If someone at Virginia Tech had been carrying a gun, maybe the second shooting wouldn't even have happened and those 30 people would still be with us.
