Former Undergraduate Student Government President Nick Stathes allegedly threw beer bottles through two windows of a house in the early morning hours of Jan. 24, according to court documents.
Stathes has been charged with loitering and prowling at nighttime, criminal mischief, scattering rubbish and two counts of disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint filed March 13.
Stathes waived his preliminary hearing that was scheduled for today at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte. His next court date will be a pretrial conference on July 24, according to court administration.
Stathes, who was still president of USG at the time of the alleged incident, said he met with State College police to discuss his options. "There's a number of inaccuracies in the report, but they're not inaccuracies that would call into question what I did," he said. "I made a mistake. I admitted my mistake. I'm gonna pay for the damages and move on."
According to the complaint, Stathes engaged in an argument with two men at about 12:45 a.m. in front of 529 S. Pugh St. Residents told police that Stathes threatened to "do something to their house."
The complaint states that Stathes saw his ex-girlfriend with a resident of the house. Residents also told police that Stathes had previously been in a fight with a resident. Stathes said the girl was an "acquaintance," not a former girlfriend. He also said he was currently on good terms with the house residents.
According to the complaint, Stathes' roommate "started physically pulling" him away from the argument and they returned to their apartment. However, Stathes returned to the house about an hour later and threw a beer bottle through a window, according to court documents.
Residents saw Stathes and told him they had called the police. As a police officer was talking to residents inside, Stathes threw a beer bottle through the window in the back door of the house, according to the complaint.
The officer heard someone running up an alley and alerted all officers to lookout for Stathes. Police located him at a residence at the corner of Pugh Street and East Fairmount Avenue, according to the complaint.
Stathes was "very intoxicated and belligerent," police said.
He told police that he had been inside for hours, but there was fresh snow on his sneakers, and his sneaker tread matched snow prints behind the 529 S. Pugh St. house, according to the complaint. Stathes said he had applied to the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program and is waiting for approval from the Centre County District Attorney's office. Stathes said the program will allow him to have his record expunged after a year of good behavior.
Stathes said his behavior that night was "definitely not regular."
"I drank a little too much and I made a mistake," he said.
