'Rapping' up Penn State
First Blue-White Rapper Contest to be held this weekend

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State is getting a new rap.

This year's first Blue White Rapper Show will have its final four contestants perform their rhyming skills tomorrow at 6 p.m. on a stage outside Beaver Stadium. The winner will be chosen based on audience applause and have the opportunity to stage the winning rap at the first home football game for the upcoming season. The winner will also be awarded three field passes for friends.

Penn State Director of Branding and Communications Guido D'Elia said a surprise Penn State football player will be hosting Friday's show and that along with the four finalists, players from the team and even Penn State President Graham Spanier will be rapping about PSU football.

"We actually had an awful lot of students who kept submitting songs or videos that they would have liked to have played at the stadium during the game, and we kept getting these offers," he said. "So we thought why don't we have a contest on who does the best rap song about the student section and the games, and we'll have them perform at a home game."

The show's rappers originated from a contest that began with a requirement to submit a one-minute video performing a rap about Penn State football. D'Elia said there were 16 video raps posted online at GoPSF.com and voted on by online viewers, reducing the number to eight. From there, these eight battled for the four spots by performing their Penn State raps through four rounds that took place at the HUB-Robeson Center starting Monday and ending today. Only one rapper advanced each round at the discretion of a panel of judges.

Spudd McKenzy, formally known as Andrew Spadaro (freshman-hotel, restaurant and institutional management), won in the first round at the HUB on Monday against Dj Fraudjack, otherwise known as Dan Kennedy (sophomore- history).

"I'm really excited -- I didn't think I would stand a chance, but I had a good crowd support and performance," Sapadaro said. He said it took him about a week to write the rap and record the video submission. "I wouldn't say it's a hobby, we [he and his friends] goof around and record; all the guys I hang out with are pretty musically oriented."

Spadaro said he and his friends drew straws to see who would enter the contest, which he now hopes to win entirely.

"I got some stiff competition though," he said.

Kennedy didn't make it past the first round, but said he was pleased with himself for making it to the top eight.

"It started out as kind of a joke" among friends at 90.7 The Lion, Kennedy said. "I was pretty surprised everyone was voting for me, but it was a lot of fun."
