Second Mile to auction art

For The Collegian

For the 18th year in a row, Penn State students and members of the State College community will be given the chance to take home hundreds of prizes for a good cause tomorrow night.

The Second Mile-hosted event will be held at the Day's Inn Penn State, 240 S. Pugh St., and features both a live and silent auction of more than 100 items including artwork, jewelry, trips, dinners, furniture and PSU memorabilia donated by local artists and merchants.

The evening, which also includes cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, dinner and live music, is set to a casual theme of a Blue and White tailgate.

"The auction is ultimately a fun, casual evening," said volunteer co-chairwoman Linda Brown. "It is about coming out, supporting a cause and going home with great prizes and a great experience."

The Second Mile is a privately funded organization founded by past Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The organization offers free programs and services designed to enhance the critical thinking, goal setting and other life skills for children in State College and around Pennsylvania.

"Today more than 100,000 children participate in prevention, early intervention and community based programs," Brown said. Bill Speakman, vice president for development, said the Second Mile works hand-in-hand with public school educators across the Commonwealth, supporting their efforts to improve student learning and supplementing and enhancing schools' programmatic offerings. The main goal for the art auction is to raise $40,000 for the Second Mile organization.

"All the money earned at the auction directly benefits the children of Second Mile, and the programs we have established to provide them with a more promising future," Speakman said.

The auction will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person; tickets will be available at the door and can be purchased by calling the Second Mile at 237-1719.

"Everyone involved with Second Mile has been working extremely hard toward this event and is extremely excited for it all to unfold," Brown said. "People should definitely come out and support this great cause -- and also take home some amazing prizes in the process."
