All universities can learn from Monday's shootings

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger deserves a failing grade for how he initially dealt with the shooting on his campus. Not cancelling any classes until after the second shooting took place is absolutely unacceptable. If anything, the morning classes should have been cancelled until police at least knew the location of the gunman and could contain the situation. President Steger said in his press conference that the e-mails were sent out as quickly as possible after the first shooting. Does it really take more than two hours to send out an e-mail to all faculty, students and staff on a college campus?I truly hope that other universities learn from his mistakes and deal with these unfortunate incidents swifter than he did. The schools should even look into a text messaging service like Penn State has in order to alert the students quickly. In the meantime, I hope that President Steger helps his students and staff in their time of grieving.
