Letter to the Editor
Shootings are reminiscent of PSU event 10 years ago

In response to the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech Monday, I just couldn't help but notice how many students the Collegian interviewed responded about how they couldn't believe something like that could happen on campus and how that might affect security on Penn State's campus. It just saddens me that they don't realize something like this did happen at Penn State just 10 years ago. They have forgotten about how students just like them went through what the poor students at Virginia Tech are going through when Penn State student Jillian Robbins opened fire on the HUB lawn killing one person and wounding another. If she had not been brought under control so soon, Penn State's shooting could have been as bad as Virginia Tech's. I think students need to know that no campus is as safe as you think it is. Take a look at all of your school's history, not just the good parts, and remember you are not alone. As bad as it seems now, it will get better. I know because I lived through the Penn State shooting. Melanie Spalla was my best friend and roommate. All of her friends, as well as all the Penn State alumni who went to Penn State at the time of the shooting, know what Virginia Tech students are going through. Keep the entire Virginia Tech student body in your thoughts and let them know that you care.
