Athletes go up for sale

Collegian Staff Writer

A lap dance from water polo player Sean Williams is worth exactly $16 -- or at least it was last night in a fundraiser at HUB Heritage Hall.

Attendees of the Penn State Marketing Association (PSMA) Date Auction watched as lacrosse player Megan McGuire "bought" Williams. Bidders on the water polo player were not only paying for a date with him, but for a lap dance Williams promised, which McGuire received on stage immediately after the bidding on Williams closed.

"It was hot," McGuire said, laughing. "I didn't really expect him to do it up there, but hey, whatever."

PSMA held the event as a way to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand, an organization that deals with pediatric cancer.

"We came up with the idea because we were looking for a way to raise money, just in general, whether for an organization or for a charity," Jessica Hoffman, a member of PSMA and co-chair of the event, said.

Tim Boylan, a co-chairman of the event, said the response from the athletes was "really positive."

Bidding for each athlete started at one dollar. Penn State ACHA Division I Icer John Conte raised the most money after bidding closed at $60. Football player Deon Butler raised $35.

Leyla Morzan of the women's tennis team is auctioned off for a date.

"I was nervous," wrestler Micheal Eagen, who was bought for $25, said. "As long as I went for over $5 I was alright."

Tennis player Bradley Hunter called the woman who paid $35 for him a "strapping broad."

"It was exhilarating," he said. "It was humbling because I was expecting big money and one of my friends had to pick me up by my bootstraps because the bidding was low."

Hunter's "strapping broad," Kelly Jubic (junior-education), said she bid on Hunter after she saw his performance on stage.

"He is a gentleman and he was doing a little performance on stage, and it swayed my decision," she said.

Frank Macinsky, one of the two emcee's for the night, said before the event that he was excited to have been tapped to act as host.

"They contacted me and I was like okay ... let's rock 'n' roll," he said.

Boylan said the amount raised will be announced today, but he estimated the total to be about $800.
