A Penn State student was arrested yesterday for allegedly obtaining "pounds of marijuana on a regular basis," police said.

Police seized more than three pounds of marijuana -- worth about $15,000 -- during a search of Daniel Arce's home at 943 Old Boalsburg Road yesterday morning, according to a press release from the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office. Police also seized about $5,000 worth of cash, drug paraphernalia, scales and packaging materials during the search, according to the release.

Arce, 26, who is listed in the student directory as an economics student at Penn State, was arraigned before Centre County District Justice Carmine Prestia yesterday afternoon.

He was committed to Centre County Correctional Facility in lieu of $125,000 bail.

Arce has been charged with one count of possession with intent to deliver marijuana, two counts of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity and three counts each of delivery of marijuana, possession of marijuana and criminal use of a communication facility, according to the criminal complaint.

A confidential informant had been providing information to police about Arce since November 2006, according to the complaint.

The informant purchased marijuana three times from Arce since February, according to the complaint.

According to court documents, the informant would contact Arce on his cell phone and then purchase the marijuana at Arce's house.

After his arrest, Arce allegedly told police that "he has been obtaining from two to four pounds of marijuana approximately two times a month and has sold that amount for the past two to three years in the Centre County Region," according to the complaint.

Arce was renting a car and driving to New York to purchase marijuana from a source there, according to the complaint.

The complaint indicates that Arce rented a car 20 times since January.

Randy Feathers, a regional director of the attorney general's office, would not comment on the identity of the New York source but said authorities were still investigating.

"We are still following up on some leads," he said.

Feathers said the arrest should have a "short term" effect on the supply of marijuana in the area, adding that police thought Arce was an "above mid-level" dealer.

Authorities made a "strategic decision" to search Arce's house yesterday, Feathers said.

"They had information that the individual had a large amount of marijuana at his residence," he said.

The arrest was the result of a collaborative effort among the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General's Centre County Drug Task Force, Patton Township police, State College police and Penn State University police.

Arce's preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. April 25 at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
