The Penn State men's track and field team's trip to the University of Tennessee for the Sea Ray Relays this weekend was shorter than anticipated.

After a 24-minute weather delay, the final 13 events of Saturday's meet were canceled because of the threat of severe storms in the area of the Tom Black Track.

After a hard week of practice and 600 miles of travel to Knoxville, Tenn., the cancellation of the final events left the team disappointed.

"The coaching staff and the team were very upset and frustrated by it," Penn State head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "There just wasn't much that we could do, we just loaded up the bus and headed home."

Mark Miller was one Nittany Lion who impressed in the events that were completed. He used a season-best time of 1 minute, 49.81 seconds in the 800-meter run to win the event, and he bettered his previous regional-qualifying performance.

"He went out slow through 400 [meters] and it was a kicker's race, and down the home stretch he was able to pull away," Alford Sullivan said. "He has been putting together great races and he has been competing at a higher and higher level. He had two really good competitions this weekend."

In his other competition, Miller along with Brian Fuller, Mike Cadau and Tim Johnson teamed up to run a 10:05.47 in the distance medley relay to take fourth place.

In field events, Ryan Fritz tied for second place in the high jump with a jump of 7-feet, 0.50-inches. Steve Meyers finished fifth in the discus with a season-best mark of 168-11.

Pole vaulter Brad Lawrence was one Lion that caught the eye of Alford-Sullivan with his performance. Lawrence cleared 15-7, and the vault gave him a new personal best.

The Lions will be action next weekend at the Bucknell Seven-Way. The Jim Thorpe Invitational scheduled for April 21 at Nittany Lion Track has been cancelled.

"Traditionally, it is a weekend where a lot of teams take off or rest or go to some low key meets," Alford-Sullivan said. "We just didn't get the turnout to hold the competition that was really needed to be competitive.
