The Penn State women's tennis team (9-10, 3-5 Big 10) won it's home finale, 5-2, over Michigan State Saturday afternoon.
Nearly half of the Nittany Lion roster is comprised of seniors, and the team as a whole made sure the seniors' last home match would be a victory.
"All and all, I was very pleased," Penn State coach Buffy Baker said. "I felt like we stepped it up."
In doubles, The Nittany Lions swept the Spartans. Penn State sophomore Lauren Holzberg and freshman Lauren McCarthy defeated Sarah Andrews and Jessica Baron 8-3. Senior Sasha Abraham, and junior Jenny Shular added an 8-6 victory over Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler. Senior Andreea Niculescu and sophomore Dorothy Dohanics capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 defeat of Marianne Eelens Pascale Schnitzer.
The Spartans were quick to tie the score when Kebler defeated Holzberg 6-1, 6-2. The Nittany Lions took a 2-1 lead when Shular defeated Andrews 6-1, 6-4. It didn't take long for Michigan State to tie the score at two, however, with Schnitzer's 6-1, 6-0 win over Abraham. Penn State finished the match strong, winning the final three singles matches.
"I felt like we stepped it up at the end," Baker said. "The rest of the team did it for them [seniors]."
Perhaps the toughest match of the afternoon was McCarthy's 7-5, 5-7, 10-5 win over Eelens. McCarthy, who just got over being sick, seemed to fatigue midway through the match, but got her energy back for the end.
"I felt like she [McCarthy] had opportunities to close it out, especially while leading the second set 5-2," Baker said. "As the match went on, she got her steam back."
With the convincing win, Penn State is looking to keep the momentum moving into its final regular season matches this weekend at Indiana and Ohio State.
"This is what they need to do right now, be competitive. It's towards the end, they have to peak."
