When asked what color she would be if she had the choice, Kimberly Davis replied, "I'd be a rainbow because -- obvious reasons."
Davis (freshman-theatre technology and design), who was referred to as Jinx, was given a rainbow sash and a silver tiara Saturday night after being crowned Mr. Gay Penn State.
The show, which was held in Heritage Hall, was Undertones' second annual pageant, formerly known as the Mr. and Ms. Gay Penn State Pageant.
According to its Web site, www.clubs.psu.edu/up/undertones, Undertones is an organization that provides support for the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, ally and queer (LGBTAQ) community of color.
Five students competed in the show, which consisted of a talent competition, a "dress to impress" section and an on-stage interview portion.
To earn her win, Davis recited a poem she wrote titled "Letters to a Poet" during the talent competition.
"I've never really won anything before," Davis said. "It's something I can tell my mom ... she'll be more excited than I am."
Davis said she didn't do anything special to prepare for the competition. "I danced my nerves away," she said.
Dancing seemed to be an audience favorite as a crowd of about 100 people cheered and clapped during a performance by the hostess, Marisol.
Jose Romero (sophomore-rehabilition services) dressed in drag as Marisol. He wore gray shorts, a white tank top, a vest, black heels, a black tie, a wig of long, red hair and a white cowboy hat during the dance number.
The routine included numerous pelvic thrusts and "booty" shaking. During the show, he tore off his vest, swung it around and threw it into the crowd.
As he finished, an audience member shouted, "Marisol, do you do children's birthday parties?" He just laughed in response.
Romero, Undertones' co-social chairman, was in the student drag show, but said he didn't prepare at all for tonight's performance.
After he finished dancing, Romero pulled audience members on stage for a dance competition. Students danced to Bubba Sparxxx and Ying Yang Twins' "Ms. New Booty." The audience acted as a judge by clapping for its favorite dancer.
A panel of judges then decided which competitor would win the pageant.
First runner-up Rachel Confer (junior-forensic science), who identifies as Brian, gave these three words to describe himself: "bananas, whipped cream and chocolate."
Undertones President Christina Thornton (sophomore-communication arts and sciences), who prefers CT, said next year's show might be a little different, but Undertones will "definitely do it again next spring."
Bidding farewell to guests, Romero said, "Yeah, seriously, we loved it."
