Women's tennis looks to end struggles with home match

Collegian Staff Writer

The season for the Penn State women's tennis team (8-10, 2-5 Big Ten) is almost coming to an end as it heads into its last home match against Michigan State.

The Nittany Lions will serve as host to the Spartans at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Penn State's Sarni Tennis Center.

The Lions are coming off a 4-3 victory against Illinois and a 4-3 loss against No. 46 Purdue last weekend.

Sophomore Dorothy Dohanics fell 6-4 to Illinois' Meza Cuadra in the first set, but showed a strong performance with 6-2 and 6-2 victories in the second and third set. Against Purdue, Dohanics beat Anna Dzeva, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Senior Sasha Abraham was named Big Ten player of the week after going 4-0 last weekend. She defeated Illinois' Momei Qu, 6-3, 6-2 and Purdue's Brooke Beier, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

In doubles, Abraham paired up with junior Jenny Shular, where they have won their last three matches together in doubles play. They topped Illinois' Shivani Dave and Alejandra MezaCuadra, 8-1, and beat Purdue's Neela Vaez and Cigdem Duru, 8-5.

Abraham, who is 9-17 overall in singles this season and 16-14 in doubles with five different partners.

"She has struggled during parts of the spring season, but she is continuing to improve," head coach Buffy Baker said. "She is the type of player who is so passionate about the sport and loves competing."

Baker said the Lions are ready for their last home match against the Spartans because they have reinforced their basic drills in practice and also changed up partners for doubles after problems last weekend.

"It's the homestretch, and we can't believe we are at that point," said Baker. "We blew two double points last weekend, and we have decided to mix it up."

Although the Lions are undergoing some illnesses, it has not stopped the Lions' motivation against the Spartans, who are currently coming off with two losses against Minnesota, 5-2, and Iowa, 6-1, last weekend.

In singles play against Minnesota, Spartan's player Pascale Schnitzer defeated Danielle Mousseau, 6-2, and 6-3 while Jessica Baron received another victory for Michigan State over Ida Malmberg, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

In doubles, Michigan State's Sarah Andrews and Jessica Baron were 2-0 last weekend as they defeated Minnesota's Karina Chiarelli and Danielle Mousseau, 8-4, and Iowa's Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga, 8-4.
