Club baseball to play under the lights

Collegian Staff Writer

Going into this season, the Penn State club baseball team knew it would have plenty of solid pitching to stay in most games.

But this season, the offense has been as potent as the pitching staff that has defined the club over the years.

The No. 1 ranked club hopes to keep up the double-digit run totals at 7 tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park and tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon against Pittsburgh.

One of the key members of the offense, third baseman Dave Brodeur, likes the way his team has fared at the plate this season.

"The offense has been hot," Brodeur said. "Everybody's just swinging a good bat."

The team is 12-0 and has scored in double digits in eight games and notched five shutouts in five.

Brodeur credits a new attitude at the plate for the outburst of runs this season.

"We're all just being more aggressive at the plate," Brodeur said. "We are looking for more pitches, so we get more runs."

Last season, Brodeur was 4-1 as a pitcher. He switched to third base this season in order to get his bat in the lineup more often.

He hit two home runs in a game during spring training and has continued to put up big numbers during the regular season.

Penn State will be playing its second series of the season at Medlar Field but its first at night.

Brodeur said that he really enjoys playing at Medlar Field and that playing under the lights is going to be special.

"It's going to be awesome," Brodeur said. "Playing in front of the home crowd is just going to be great."

Brodeur said that he has a friend on Pittsburgh's team and that the two of them have been talking about this game for some time.

"It's going to be fun playing against one of my friends," Brodeur said. "We've been jawing back and forth for awhile."

This is Pittsburgh's second season in the New Penn West Conference, and Penn State hopes to continue its success against conference teams.

These games will be the club's last home games of the season, and after playing three games at Governor's Field in Bellefonte and will have played six at Medlar Field.

With only three series before the regional tournaments begin, Penn State coach Bill Lippert is starting to have an idea of the capabilities of his team.

Pitcher Pete Chalfin has only allowed one hit in his last two starts, and the offense has been putting up big numbers.

Brodeur hopes that beating Pittsburgh will send a message to the league that the undefeated club is for real.

"We just need to keep hitting," Brodeur said. "This season has been incredible."
