Andrew Pierce's letter to the editor is one of the most unintelligible excuses for rhetoric I have ever read ("Choice to use marijuana should be a personal one," April 12). Throughout Mr. Pierce's feeble attempt to promote marijuana use and its alleged legality, he relies heavily upon faulty logic to "prove" his points. His feculent caffeine example aside (not all carbonated beverages contain caffeine, by the way), he completely misses in his discussion of marijuana. Marijuana is not termed a gateway drug because of its "addictive nature." It is termed a gateway drug because of the natural progression to use something harder as marijuana decreases in effectiveness with increased use. This is an interpretation of the law of diminishing returns, which you can find in your economics textbook. So why should society be concerned if this only affects individuals? Having less productive individuals leads to a less productive society. I think my favorite part, though, is the little jab Mr. Pierce makes at President Bush. If nothing else, it perpetuates the stereotype that the only advocates of drug use are left-wing liberals who contribute nothing to society. Marijuana is illegal. Leave the country if you don't like it.
