Jazz artist to visit Eisenhower
Broadway performer to begin her tour this Saturday evening along with a jazz orchestra.

It's time for University Park to spruce up -- some divas are coming to town.

Jazz singer, songwriter and Broadway performer Ann Hampton Callaway will start her tour in the Eisenhower Auditorium Saturday, along with percussionist Sherrie Maricle and her all-female, New York City-based Diva Jazz Orchestra that Callaway herself praised as "consummate, fun women."

A multiplatinum-selling artist, Callaway's claim to fame is being the brains behind the theme song for the TV show The Nanny. Since then, she has released solo albums and has written songs among stars such as Barbra Streisand and Cole Porter.

As for her most recent accomplishment, Callaway has extended her love for performing by acting. Growing up, she loved the musical integration of movies like The Wizard of Oz. She upheld that love by starring alongside Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie in Robert DeNiro's film The Good Shepherd.

Just last year, Callaway signed with Grammy-award winning label Telarc International. In August 2006, her most recent album, Blues in the Night, was released to rave reviews. According to The New York Times, "For sheer vocal beauty, no contemporary singer matches Ms. Callaway."

Daughter of television journalist John Callaway, she was born and raised in Chicago with an artistic family. Now, singing and performing is more than just a job -- it's a passion.

"The most important part of living is loving," Callaway said. "If you don't love what you do, it makes it harder. I love being an artist."

Staying busy doing exactly that, Callaway said she always tries to find time to "stop and smell the roses." This may be a good thing, since she has yet another album coming out this year that she said will be a little more on the romantic side.

Even with a busy schedule, she keeps in touch with her fans through "Ann-thology," a formal blog she writes on her Web site, www.annhamptoncallaway.com.

The audience can expect Callaway to sing songs from her CD, some jazz standards and even a Penn State love song.

"I love being able to bring a whole room of strangers together," she said about her concerts. "There's a wide variety of people, including those who love great American standards ... but some need [to come] to discover just how sexy this music is."
